Our Four Seasons
Winter:
Snowfall in Portage Lake can be as early as November, bringing on snowsled fever. In the center of 1600 miles of groomed trails sits the Town of Portage Lake.
Trails leading in and out of town provide access to all major and scenic winter wonderlands in Northern Maine. The adventures on the trails are abundant.
We offer year-round lodging, food, gas and trail information.
Winter being the busiest season for Portage Lake with the snowmobiling, ice-fishing and the Can-Am dog sled races and the cross-country ski trails, the towns people are never to busy to offer information or a helping hand to anyone in need.
Spring:
Portage Lake is nestled at the base of two converging hills overlooking the lake. Entry into town, either from the south or the north, over the crest of those hills, provides one of the most breathtaking and picturesque views in the state.
Ice-out is the awakening of the lakes, brooks and streams which bring on some of the best spring fishing known to those dedicated anglers. Public boat access is available.
If you arrive early enough, you will be blessed with the scene of uncountable herds of deer looking for a spring tonic.
Spring also brings on the return of new flowers and the summer residents, that have been away during our winter months.
Summer:
Summer has the town and sporting camps buzzing with activity. People from far and wide come to golf on Portage Lake's own nine hole golf course. The lake offers boating, swimming, water and jet skiing and scenic airplane flights. Camping, hiking, horse trail riding and indoor and outdoor archery ranges are just more of the activites offered in this small town of ours. Two town municipal areas offer a basketball court, softball/baseball field, two tennis courts and playground.
Our public beach with outdoor grills, covered picnic tables, public facilities and adjoining playground offers a full day of enjoyment. The town also offers a public campground with boat access.
The fourth of July is enhanced with an annual boat parade, and water-ski show.
Fall:
This time of year is when the trees surrounding the town show off the vibrant colors that bring out those that are affectionately known as the leaf peepers.
The town and surrounding sporting camps invite the avid sportsmen to test their skills. The season starts with bear, grouse and moose hunting. Deer hunting closes out the season with many hunters going home with tales of the big one, (the one that got away).
