In 1986, we made our first wreath and got hooked. They were sold locally and a few were mail ordered. Today, we sell out of our shop, deliver locally, with mail order being at the top. Our wreaths are made with fresh Balsam Fir that we tip ourselves. We gather pine cones throughout the year and make our own decorations including the bows.
In 1988, we started planting Balsam Fir Christmas Trees which we sell wholesale or choose & cut. We presently have approximately 14,000 trees in the ground on our farm. In 2008 we donated trees to the "Trees for Troops" program.
As our Christmas business grew so did the need to create and expand. In 1999, we opened a consignment gift shop. We now carry the arts and crafts of over 75 Maine artisans including Judy's photography and paintings.
In 2007, we expanded our business to include scented gel candles. We hand pour each and every one in our shop and market them under the "Chickadee Candles" label.
We are presently at work expanding our perennial gardens with the goal of having garden walks and nature trails open in the Spring of 2010. Wildflowers are also used in our landscape. The critters love it!
Aroostook County, located in Northern Maine, is a beautiful place to live and work. The days are long but that's OK. It's worth it!! Our farm is surrounded by natures beauty...the birds, of which the Bald Eagle is making quite a showing these days, give us so much joy. We watched a Barred Owl at midnight one evening hunting on our front lawn. There are many, many species of birds in our gardens in addition to the butterflies - Monarch included, Leopard Frogs, Dragonflies, etc. The wildlife around our home is amazing. The Whitetail Deer have decided that our raspberry patch is the place to have their babies. The Red Fox are here daily. Moose are also a common sight along with the Black Bear and Coyote. Plus you wouldn't believe the stars at night, the majestic views including Mt. Katahdin from our Christmas Tree fields, and awesome sunsets! We want to be able to stay here and be self-sufficient by having our own business and employing and/or promoting others so that they can remain in the area as well.
If you come to OxBow, you won't be disappointed. The ride in the Fall is awesome! There is lots to see (nature, that is) and do if you want a wilderness experience. The Aroostook River runs right through OxBow. There is a public boat launch for canoers or kayakers. We are the Gateway to the North Maine Woods - OxBow - for hunting and fishing or rustic camping.
Our Deep In The Woods Gift Shop is open January ~ October Thursday - Monday 10:00 a.m.~ 5:00 p.m. or by chance or appointment. In November & December, we are open everyday 9:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. You can shop online 24 hours a day @ www.deepinthewoods.org.
