The County

The Lions Club of Caribou along with the Presque Isle Club were jointly sponsored by the Houlton Lions Club and chartered on November 27, l936. In 1986, they celebrated their 50th anniversary with members from all three clubs in attendance. All three of these clubs are very active to this date.

Our membership includes a wide range of people and would welcome inquiries from people living in the area who would be interested to join.

We meet twice a month, the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. Our meeting are held at Green Acres Restaurant in the winter months and at the Lions Picnic Ground on Collins Pond from May thru September.

Fund Raising Projects:

Three to four times a year, a "Bean-Hole-Bean
supper is held (June - Sept.)

Annually, on the first day of the Caribou Winter Carnival, the Caribou Lions Club Sportsmen Banquet is held, at which time area patrons come together to have an evening of food and fun to honor our Fish and Game Wardens. (This is our largest fund raiser).
At Christmas time, Christmas wreaths are sold.

Snowmobile cookouts - a fun day at a local pond.

New - Annual "Caribou Lions Club Golf tournament".

Man food tent at the local "Soap Box Derby".

In 1990, the Lions and Lioness held a joint project: "The Caribou Telephone Directory". This was a lot of work for the clubs, but in the end, the Clubs split a profit of $5,206.72.

Like all Service Clubs, we have tried numerous projects from selling potatoes to selling Christmas tree ornaments.

Service Activities

On an annual basis, we purchase eyeglasses for those in need. Mostly school age children and senior citizens.

NOTE: We just shipped out 15 cases of used eyeglasses to help needy people around the world.

Monetary donations are made to the "Maine Sight".

Donations are also made to various clubs and organizations and to our schools to enable them to promote and participate to their miscellaneous activities.

"Project Graduation", a worthwhile project is also a recipient of funds.

Two scholarships of $500.00 are awarded each year.

Over $6,000.00 has been donated to Lions Club International Fund.

Annual Christmas baskets are distributed to needy families living in our area.

From 1975 thru 1986, we raised money and received donations, which enabled us to construct and give to the City of Caribou, a building known as the "Lions Community Center". This building is valued in excess of $150,000.00 and is used by the youth and seniors of our area for their various activities.

Our second major project was to establish the "Caribou Lions Picnic Area", located on Collins Pond. There is a central building (which is used for cooking, etc.) with an attached canopy sheltering 15 picnic tables. An individual canopy holds an additional 9 picnic tables. Members of our Community for various activities use this site almost daily during the summer months. This is also the site for our famous "Bean-Hole-Bean" suppers.

As needed, we donate to other deserving causes. (Usually a one-time donation).

LCIF (Lion's Club International Foundation) is the charitable arm of Lions Clubs International. The foundation's mission is to support the efforts of Lions clubs around the world in serving their local and global communities by funding humanitarian service projects. Last year alone LCIF approved more than $31 million (US) in grants for Lions' districts around the world.
