Historic Forts
  • Fort Allen - Portland ~ Cumberland County
    Little remains of the 1814 fort, tiers of earthwork still visible. Located in a city park, free admission.

  • Fort Baldwin - Phippsburg ~ Sagadahoc County
    Built between 1905 and 1912. Three batteries are heavily hidden in the heavily wooded Sabino Hill. Part of Popham State Park. A fire control tower gives awesome view of the Maine coast.

  • Fort Edgecomb - Edgecomb ~ Lincoln County
    Dates back to 1808 and 1809. Original octagonal blockhouse still remains, as well as eathworks showing layers of construction. State Park. Fee.

  • Fort Fairfield - Fort Fairfield ~ Aroostook County
    This fort is a replica of the 1839 blockhouse that was built to prevent Canada from transporting lumber down the Aroostook River. The replica was built in 1976.

  • Fort Foster - Gerrish Island, Kittery ~ York County
    This fort was built in 1900 and additional construction was done during WW II. Fee.

  • Fort George - Castine ~ Hancock County
    Built in 1779 by the British ans was occupied by them until the end of the Revolutionary War. State owned.

  • Fort Gorges - Hog Island Ledge, Portland ~ Cumberland County
    Construction started in 1858, but after the invention of the rifled cannon that was capable of destroying granite forts, was deemed outdated and behind the times. Owned by the city and is free to enter but only accessible by boat.

  • Fort Halifax - Winslow ~ Kennebec County
    This fort was the second of three forts built on the Kennebec River. Dating back to 1754, it is thought to be the oldest in the US. State owned.

  • Fort Kent - Fort Kent ~ Aroostook County
    This was the last wooden blockhouse constructed in the State of Maine and was used for protection against the Canadians and the British during the Aroostook Bloodless War. Fee.

  • Fort Knox - Prospect ~ Hancock County
    Construction began in 1844 to provide protection to the Penobscot River during the northeast boundry dispute with Canada.

  • Fort Levett - Cushing Island, Portland ~ Cumberland County
    Built on 140 acres of land that was acquired by the government in the late 1800's dating to 1942. Privately owned island that is accessible only with written permission.

  • Fort Lyon - Cow Island ~ Portland County
    Privately owned and built on land acquired in 1973.

  • Fort Madison - Castine ~ Hancock County
    This fort was built in 1811 and was occupied by the British in 1814 and 1815.

  • Fort McKinley - Great Diamond Island, Portland ~ Cumberland County
    Built in the late 1800's.

  • Fort McLary - Kittery ~ York County
    Constructed in 1808 and 1809 with additional construction during the civil war. Fee.

  • Fort O'Brien - Machiasport ~ Washington County
    Built around 1775 overlooking Machias Bay, and was the site of the first naval battle during the Revolutionary War.

  • Fort Popham - Phippsburg ~ Lincoln County
    Construction of this circular granite fort began in 1861 and was never finished. Fee.

  • Fort Pownall - Stockton Springs ~ Waldo County
    Built around 1759. Fee.

  • Fort Preble - South Portland ~ Cumberland County
    Dates back to 1808 and was rebuilt around the Civil War and Spanish-American Wars. Still retains original structures and batteries from the turn of the century.

  • Fort Scammel - House Island, Portland ~ Cumberland County
    Built around 1808, but was extensively rebuilt around the Civil War. Privately owned, but access is available for a fee.

  • Fort St. Georges - St. George ~ Knox County
    Built around 1809. Accessible only by boat. Free.

  • Fort Sullivan - Eastport ~ Washington County
    Dates from the early 1800's. Barracks and part of the brick magazine still remain. Fee.

  • Fort Western - Augusta ~ Kennebec County
    Built in 1754 to protect the settlers from the French and Indians. Fee.

  • Fort William Henry - Bristol ~ Lincoln County
    Replica of the 1692 fort that was the largest and strongest in America. It was destroyed in 1696. There are also three other colonial forts at this location. Fee.

  • Peaks Island - Portland ~ Cumberland County
    Completed in 1945 and includes two batteries and two fire control towers. Free.

Lighthouses
  • Baker Island Light - Cranberry Isles ~ Hancock County
    Located at the entrance to Frenchman Bay. built in 1828 and rebuilt in 1855. Unattended light house 105 feet above highwater. Spectacular views on a nice day.

  • Bass Harbor Head Light - Tremont ~ Hancock County
    Marks the entrance to Bass Harbor. Stands 56 feet above highwater. Built in 1858 and is accessible by car.

  • Bears Island Light - Cranberry Isles ~ Hancock County
    Stands at entrance to Northeast Harbor, this light was built in 1839 and rebuilt in 1889. White cylindrical tower is 100 feet above highwater.

  • Boon Island Light - York ~ York County
    Located nine miles out from York Beach. Light was built in 1811 and replaced in 1855, the granite cone-like tower is the tallest in the state at 133 feet in height and is situated on a rock ledge.

  • Browns Head Light - Vinalhaven ~ Hancock County
    Original structure was built in 1832 and replaced in 1857. Tower stands at 20 feet. An oil house was added in 1903.

  • Burnt Coat Harbor Light - Swans Island ~ Hancock County
    Built on the southern tip of Swans Island in 1872, this tower stands at 32 feet. Brick oil house was added in 1895. Access is by boat only.

  • Burnt Island Light - Southport ~ Lincoln County
    Located on the west side of Boothbay Harbor, and is one of the oldest lights on the east coast, built in 1821.

  • Cape Elizabeth Light - Cape Elizabeth ~ York County
    Twin lighthouses were constructed here in 1829. They were replaced in 1874 and since 1924 only one light has been operational. May be accessed by car.

  • Cape Neddick Light - York ~ York County
    This tower which stands 88 feet above high water was built in 1878 and is accessible by car.

  • Curtis Island Light - Camden ~ Knox County
    Built on the southside of Camden Harbor in 1838 and replaced in 1896. Stands 25 feet tall and accessed only by boat.

  • Dice Head Light - Castine ~ Hancock County
    Located at the entrance to Castine Harbor, this towers was built in 1829, and was discontinued in 1935 and was replaced with a bare tower in 1937.

  • Doubling Point Light - Arrowsic ~ Sagadahoc County
    Built in 1899, this octagonal structure sits 13 feet high and rests on a granite block. A wooden bridge takes you to the privately owned keeper's quarters.

  • Eagle Island Light - Deer Isle ~ Hancock County
    This granite lighthouse was built in 1838 with an oil house and additional structures near the turn of the century.

  • Egg Rock Light - Winter Harbor ~ Hancock County
    This tower sits 64 feet above highwater and guards the entrance to Frenchman Bay. It was erected in 1875.

  • Fort Point Light - Stockton Springs ~ Waldo County
    Andrew Jackson ordered this lighthouse be built in 1836 and was the site of two revolutionary battles. The tower is 31 feet high with a granite foundation is constructed of bricks.

  • Franklin Island Light - Friendship ~ Knox County
    Built in 1805 and replaced in 1855. Only accessible by boat.

  • Goat Island Light - Kennebunkport ~ York County
    Built in 1835 and rebuilt in 1859, this lighthouse rests on a natural ledge foundation. Also on this site is a boathouse, keepers quarters and oil house. Accessible by boat only.

  • Great Duck Island Light - Frenchboro ~ Hancock County
    This tower is 67 feet above high water and is a well-known landmark. It was built in 1890.

  • Grindel Point Light - Isleboro ~ Waldo County
    Overlooks the entrance to Gilkey Harbor. Built in 1850 and replaced in 1875.

  • Halfway Rock Light - Portland ~ Cumberland County
    Located between Portland Head Light and Seguin Light. This 76 foot tower was built on a submerged ledge in 1871.

  • Hendricks Head Light - Southport ~ Lincoln County
    This Light built at the mouth of the Sheepscot River in 1829 was replaced by the present light in 1875. This lighthouse is privately owned.

  • Heron Neck Light - Vinalhaven ~ Knox County
    This 30 foot lighthouse was built in 1854, but fire damaged the keeper's quarters in 1989. Access is by boat only.

  • Isle Au Haut Light - Isle Au Haut ~ Knox County
    This white tower was built in 1907 and is connected to shore by a wooden foot bridge.

  • Libby Island Light - Machiasport ~ Washington County
    This lighthouse was constructed in 1817 at the entrance to Machias Bay.

  • Little River Light - Cutler ~ Washington County
    This lighthouse was built in 1847 and rebuilt in 1975. Access is by boat only.

  • Lubec Channel Light - Lubec ~ Washington County
    Built in 1890, this light is located in the Lubec Channel and is operated by the US Coast Guard. Tower is constructed of cast iron. Access is by boat only.

  • Manana Island Fog Signal Station - Monhegan ~ Knox County
    Built in 1876, it supplies electricity to Monhegan Island Light. Light has generator building, oil house and keeper's quarters.

  • Mark Island Light - Stonington ~ Hancock County
    Erected in 1857, this light stands 68ft. from the high water.

  • Marshall Point Light - St. George ~ Knox County
    Originally built in 1823 and was rebuilt in 1858. Located on the east side of the entrance to Port Clyde Harbor.

  • Matinicus Rock Light - Criehaven ~ Knox County
    Located approximately five miles from Matinicus Island. First had a wooden building and twin wooden towers, but these were replaced by the two granite towers in 1848, that exist today.

  • Monhegan Island Light - Monhegan ~ Knox County
    Built in 1850, this picturesque granite block tower is situated on a hill in the center of the island.

  • Moose Peak Light - Jonesport ~ Washington County
    This tower was built in 1827 and stands 72 feet above the high water mark. This light, as well as the Sequin lights have the more fog than any other locations on the east coast.

  • Mount Desert Rock Light - Mount Desert ~ Hancock County
    This light, located 26 miles from the mainland is the most isolated lighthouse in New England.

  • Nash Island Light - Addison ~ Washington County
    Located on the east side of Pleasant Bay, this tower was built in 1838 and rebuilt in 1873. This light is now abandoned.

  • Owls Head Light - Owls Head ~ Knox County
    Constructed in 1826, this white granite tower stands 20 feet above ground and 100 feet above the high water mark.

  • Pemaquid Point Light - Bristol ~ Lincoln County
    Built to the west of the entrance to Muscongus Bay, it is one of Maine's prettiest lighthouses and was built in 1827.

  • Petit Manan Light - Milbridge ~ Washington County
    Built in 1817 and rebuilt in 1855. This is the second tallest lighthouse in the state, standing at 119 feet in height.

  • Pond Island Light - Phippsburg ~ Sagadahoc County
    Located at the mouth of the Kennebec River this brick tower was built in 1855. Accessible by boat only.

  • Portland Head Light - Cape Elizabeth ~ Cumberland County
    Maine's first and most famous lighthouse. This lighthouse was commissioned by George Washington in 1791. Over 200 islands can be seen from the top deck. Accessible by car.

  • Prospect Harbor Light - Gouldsboro ~ Hancock County
    This black and white tower was built in 1850.

  • Pumpkin Island Light - Deer Isle ~ Hancock County
    28 foot tower built in 1854.

  • Ram Island Ledge Light - Portland ~ Cumberland County
    Tower built in 1905 and features a wooden deck and stands tall at 72 feet.

  • Ram Island Light - Boothbay ~ Lincoln County
    35 foot tower on a granite foundation constructed in 1883.

  • Rockland Breakwater Light - Rockland ~ Knox County
    Square white tower built in 1888 and rebuilt in 1905.

  • Saddleback Ledge Light - Vinalhaven ~ Knox County
    Constructed on a ledge at the entrance to Isle au Haut Bay. This gray tower was built in 1839.

  • Seguin Light - Georgetown ~ Sagadahoc County
    One of the oldest lights on the east coast. This light was built in 1795 abd rebuilt in 1887. Situated on rocky Seguin Island and stands 180 feet above the high water mark. It is one of the highest lighthouses in the state.

  • Spring Point Ledge Light - South Portland ~ Cumberland County
    This tower was activated in 1897 and is located on the west side of the channel in Portland Harbor.

  • Squirrel Point Light - Arrowsic ~ Sagadahoc County
    Built in 1898 and is located on Arrowsic Island in the Kennebec River.

  • St. Croix Light - Calais ~ Washington County
    This tower was built in 1856, but was destroyed by a fire in 1976. The light was replaced by one atop a steel tower.

  • The Cuckolds - Southport ~ Lincoln County
    Unusual octagonal lighthouse first utilized in 1892.

  • Two Bush Island Light - Two Bush Island ~ Knox County
    First activated in 1817, this lighthouse marks the entrance to Two Bush Channel.

  • West Quoddy Head - Lubec ~ Washington County
    This tower, along with Quoddy Head State Park, mark the easternmost point in the United States. This Red and White striped tower was built in 1808 and rebuilt in 1858.

  • Whitehead Light - St. George ~ Knox County
    Commissioned by Thomas Jefferson in 1807 and then rebuilt in 1852. Located at the entrance to Mussel Ridge Channel.

  • Whitlock Mills Light - Calais ~ Washington County
    First built in 1892, was replaced in 1901. Light is still operational.

  • Wood Island Light - Biddeford ~ York County
    Located at the entrance to Saco Bay. This white granite tower was built in 1808 and rebuilt in 1858.

  • Acadian Village - Van Buren ~ Aroostook County
    Reconstructed village (some buildings were relocated) depicting life and work of early Acadian settlers.

  • Arnold Expedition Historical Society - Pittston ~ Kennebec County
    Home of Major Reuban Colburn. Museum containing boats, canoes and pictures depicting Benedict Arnold's march to Quebec. Fee.

  • Aroostook Historical and Art Museum - Houlton ~ Aroostook County
    Early settlers tools, guns, indian artifacts and uniforms. Fee.

  • Ashland Logging Museum - Ashland ~ Aroostook County
    Blacksmith shop, machine shed and logging equipment. No charge.

  • Babb's Bridge - South Windham ~ Cumberland County
    Replica of covered bridge that crosses the Presumpscot River. Original bridge was built in 1864 and burned in 1973.

  • Bennett Bridge - Lincoln Plt. ~ Oxford County
    Covered bridge crossing the Magalloway River was built in 1901.

  • Black Mansion, The - Ellsworth ~ Hancock County
    Home built in 1826, that housed three generations of the Black family. Rich furnishings, restored garden. Fee.

  • Blacksmith Shop Museum - Dover-Foxcroft ~ Piscataquis County
    Blacksmith shop that was built in 1863, and has much of the original equipment. Donations are welcome.

  • Blaine House - Augusta ~ Kennebec County
    Official residence of the governor of Maine since 1919. Built in 1833 and contains some artifacts of the James G. Blaine family.

  • Boothbay Railway Museum - Boothbay ~ Lincoln County
    Restored railway museum that houses railroad memorabilia. Includes train ride and antique auto museum. Fee.

  • Bowdoin College Museum of Art - Brunswick ~ Cumberland County
    Winslow Homer collection of Colonial and Federal portraits.

  • Brick Store Museum - Kennebunk ~ York County
    Built in 1825, was originally a general store. Several building house exhibits of local history, art, shipbuilding, and furniture library. Donations welcome.

  • Bryant Pond Telephone Company - Bryant Pond ~ Oxford County
    The last handcrank telephone system in the United States. Free.

  • Burnham Tavern - Machias ~ Washington County
    Tavern built in 1770 and is designated as the oldest building east of the Penobscot River. Furnishings and relics of the Revolutionary War era. Fee.

  • Castle Tucker - Wiscasset ~ Lincoln County
    Mansion originally built in 1807 and rebuilt in 1858 displays victorian furnishings and a freestanding elliptical staircase.

  • Chapman-Hill House - Damariscotta ~ Lincoln County
    Colonial home built in 1754, houses antique furnishings. Fee.

  • Children's Museum - Portland ~ Cumberland County
    Educational museum that features activites such as running a TV studio, post office, or painting, watching the animals and playing the piano. Fee.

  • Cobwork Bridge - Orrs Island, Bailey Island ~ Sagadahoc County
    Built in 1928 and is the only bridge of its kind in the world. Uniquely constructed with granite blocks crisscrossed on ledges to allow the tide to flow through.

  • Cole Land Transportation Museum - Bangor ~ Penobscot County
    Museum depicting the history of transportation in Maine. Includes, photographs, antique trucking vehicles, fire trucks and snow-plows. Fee.

  • Colonial Pemaquid Restoration - Pemaquid ~ Lincoln County
    Site of an archaelogical dig that has uncovered 16th and 17th century foundations. Some artifacts are housed in the museum. Fee.

  • Conway House and Mary Cramer Museum - Camden and Rockport ~ Knox County
    Site includes the 1780 Conway House, barn, blacksmith shop, and a museum. Fee.

  • Daniel Marrett House - Standish ~ Cumberland County
    Built in 1789 this house includes 18th and 19th century furnishings from the Marrett family. Includes some Helen Keller memorabilia, antique fire engines, carriage and more. Fee.

  • Dexter Historical Society Museum - Dexter ~ Penobscot County
    1853 Grist Mill that has been converted to a museum displaying local artifcacts. Donations welcome.

  • Dr. Moses Mason House - Bethel ~ Oxford County
